Human rabies is a preventable viral infection often transmitted following a rabid animal bite. The infection is almost always fatal once symptoms develop, so prevention is critical. There are measures to prevent rabies infection in humans including vaccination of targeted animals, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), avoid aggravation of high-risk mammals, and administration of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following potential rabies exposure.

On May 19, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendation that children 5 to 11 years old should receive a COVID-19 booster five months after their initial Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine series.

The Kanawha-Charleston Board of Health Establishes the “Dr. Rahul Gupta Outstanding Public Health Leadership Award”
At its March 2, 2022, meeting, the Kanawha-Charleston Board of Health announced the creation of the “Dr. Rahul Gupta Outstanding Public Health Leadership Award” at the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.
The award, named in honor of the former Kanawha-Charleston Health Department Health Officer and Executive Director and current Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Dr. Rahul Gupta, seeks to recognize outstanding commitment to public health leadership in Kanawha County.
The inaugural award will be bestowed posthumously to Mr. Paul Nusbaum, former member of the Kanawha-Charleston Board of Health and former Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. At his passing, Mr. Nusbaum was an active and valued member of the Kanawha-Charleston Board of Health. His knowledge and counsel were invaluable to the Board of Health and he was a champion of all of the efforts of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department
Walk-Up COVID Vaccine and Testing Event
Walk-up COVID-19 testing and vaccination clinic on Saturday, February 05, 2022, from 10 am-2 p.m. at the health department’s office at 108 Lee Street East, Charleston, WV 25301. Services offered include COVID-19 testing, COVID-19 adult and pediatric vaccinations, COVID-19 boosters, and flu vaccinations. No appointment is necessary.

Drive-through testing and vaccination clinic on Saturday, January 08, 2022 from 11:00am to 4:30pm at the Coonskin Park Clubhouse parking lot. Services offered will include COVID-19 testing and vaccines, Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines, COVID-19 booster vaccines and flu vaccines.
