Starting May 8, the Kanawha County Commission in partnership with the City of Charleston and the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department is launching a social media campaign to honor Mother’s Day and encourage residents to wear face masks in public. Over Mother’s Day weekend, there will be a series of familiar faces from Kanawha County on all three social media accounts asking citizens to please wear a mask. We are calling the campaign #moms4masks.
“Wearing a face covering in public, especially in places like grocery stores and pharmacies where it’s difficult to stay 6 feet away from people, helps to prevent people who may have the virus and not yet know from spreading it to other people,” said Kanawha-Charleston Health Officer Dr. Sherri Young. “People with no symptoms of the virus can still have it and may be able spread it to others, so we really want to encourage people to wear masks just in case.”
“Wearing a mask shows respect for others and is just one of the selfless acts we can all take to keep each other safe,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “Let’s show all mothers how important they are to us by wearing a mask.”
Commission President Carper said, “This Mother’s Day, let’s give our mothers the ultimate gift; peace of mind. We have mothers working in our hospitals, government buildings, and other essential jobs; all while going home to take care of their children. We have the children and grandchildren of our mothers working the frontlines. What better way to honor them and their families? Though a mask is not mandatory in West Virginia, it’s a social compact. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers!”
Commissioner Ben Salango said, “I can’t think of a more “essential” job than being a mom. This Mother’s Day, I encourage everyone to honor our hardworking moms and wear your mask. They are always willing to go the distance to protect us and we must do the same for them.”
We encourage everyone to post pictures encouraging facial protection and honoring Mother’s Day with the hashtag #moms4masks.
